A Medicare Supplement plan — also called Medigap — works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay for the costs Medicare doesn’t: things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. In exchange for a monthly premium, you get predictable costs and the freedom to see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, no networks and no referrals.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in Medicare. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts just 6 months, starting the month you’re both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in your state with no medical underwriting — insurers can’t deny you or charge you more for pre-existing conditions. Miss it, and you may be medically underwritten or denied coverage entirely.
The Most Popular Medigap Plans
| Plan | What Makes It Popular |
|---|---|
| Plan G | Covers nearly everything except the annual Part B deductible — the most popular plan for those newly eligible for Medicare. |
| Plan N | Lower premium than Plan G, with small copays for some office and ER visits — a good fit if you want to save monthly and don’t mind modest copays. |
| Plan F | The most comprehensive plan, covering the Part B deductible too — only available if you became Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020. |
Medigap plans are standardized by letter — Plan G from one carrier covers the exact same benefits as Plan G from another. That means the decision usually comes down to price, customer service, and the carrier’s track record, which is exactly the kind of comparison we handle for you.
Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage
| Medicare Supplement | Medicare Advantage | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Higher premium | Often $0–low premium |
| Provider access | Any provider that accepts Medicare, nationwide | Usually a defined network |
| Referrals needed | No | Sometimes, depending on plan type |
| Extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing) | Not included — add separately | Often included |
| Out-of-pocket predictability | Very predictable | Varies by plan and network |
